16.9.2023 Responsive Round : Zirkus ON Pro Festival in Berlin
Josef Stiller | Klub Girko took part in the first competition of the then newly founded network Zirkus ON with the concept for Responsive Round. It's hard to believe that 5 years have now passed. At the Zirkus ONstage - Pro Festival, from 2 to 4 November 2023, the creative alliance for circus arts presented circus creations from the Zirkus ON editions 2019-2023 to a German and international audience of professionals and culture enthusiasts in Berlin.

Responsive Round
In an intimate circle, a performer is moving together with balancing or falling Bamboo Sticks. But if it really is the stick that gets caught and the performer that is catching will be negotiated throughout the 45 min performance. In a simple and smart way, the performer is playing with the natural reactions of each audience member. This way, he does not only manipulate the Bamboo sticks, but also the focus and attention of the audience. A surprising sound design rounds up the performance and makes the seduction perfect.
Responsive Round is not just crossing, but even breaking the borders between audience and performers. The performance re-defines theatre in creating a participating play which would not exist without audience. In a sensitive way, the performer communicates with eye contact and movements and plays with human reflexes and reactions. People of all age and different social and ethnical backgrounds enter the circle as individuals and while becoming part of the play they grow together and share commemorable moments.
Responsive Round is a solo project initiated by Josef Stiller in 2016. His deep and intense research has recently be supported by Zirkus ON (DE), Keep an Eye Project (NL) and Circus Re-Searched (AT)
Josef Stiller is co-founder of KLUB GIRKO (NL, 2017, together with Julian Vogel and Laurence Felber). KLUB GIRKO is searching for new languages to relate circus arts to dance, theatre, music and fine arts. Driven by the desire not to rest on an accomplished comfort zone they understand KLUB GIRKO as a framework for artistic exploration, collaborations and creations of many kinds. Today, Klub Girko is lead by Josef Stiller and Mortz Grenz.
